Britain has over 250 native bee species and many of them now need our help in finding homes.

Modern agricultural methods, fewer suitable nesting sites and fewer areas where wild flowers flourish, are some of the reasons why 25% of our native bee species are now endangered.

On a more positive note, many of these bees are highly adaptable and will happily accept nest boxes placed in gardens.

    A World Without Bees New

by Alison Benjamin / Brian McCallum

The strange case of the vanishing western honeybee has led to fears that we are dangerously out of kilter with nature. Extremely topical given the prevalence of current debates surrounding climate change, air pollution and related ecological issue.

This book details the vital role the honeybee play in sustaining nature's eco systems, pollinating 70% of the food we eat and examines the environmental, political and economic forces shaping the honeybee's fragile existence - and why the world can't survive without it. Colour illustrations, 256pp. 2008
