The Hazel is known for, as the name implies, hazelnuts. You have to be patient before hazelnuts get to this plant, which can take up to 10 years. But while waiting, you can enjoy the hazel that will be the first to announce the onset of spring in your garden. Regardless of whether it is freezing, this plant will start flowering around spring. At least that is what the females do, the males then have to wait another month. It is best to prune this plant in October, as this promotes the development of the joints. The Hazel is hardy but loses its leaves in the winter. Given the size of this plant (up to 4 meters high and quite wide) it is a frequently used shelter for birds, but it also attracts many other insects such as bees and butterflies.
