Cowberries are widely used in recipes and make an excellent fruit compote or puree, as well as a jam or juice but, before processing, have a harsh, acidic somewhat bitter taste that makes them less suitable for eating raw.
The plant requires an acidic soil and fruits twice, giving a first crop in July and a secondin the autumn. The berries have a diameter of 5-8 mm and change from white to red when ripe.
