Transforming Nature and Lives at West End Women and Girls Centre Farm

At CJ Wildlife, we believe that connecting people with nature creates lasting benefits for both wildlife and communities. Our partnership with West End Women and Girls Centre has helped transform an overgrown and previously inaccessible area of their farm into a flourishing Wildlife and Pond Area that supports biodiversity, conservation education, and wellbeing.

Creating a Haven for Wildlife and People

What was once a neglected space dominated by reeds and brambles is now becoming a vibrant habitat for wildlife and a welcoming outdoor learning environment for women and girls. With support from CJ Wildlife and female National Trust rangers from Wallington Hall, the project centred around the creation of a large pond and surrounding wildlife area designed to encourage nature recovery and community engagement.

The project has included:

  • Installation of a large wildlife pond
  • Citizen science training using trail cameras and the Merlin Bird ID app
  • Construction and installation of bird feeders and red squirrel feeders
  • Guided birdwatching sessions
  • Planting of 1,000 wildflower plug plants to support pollinators
  • Creation of two hibernacula to provide shelter for wildlife

Supporting Women Through Nature

The farm welcomed a diverse range of participants, including local women and girls from the Elswick community, women seeking asylum, survivors of domestic abuse, young mothers, women on probation, and those with caring responsibilities.

The project has provided opportunities to learn new skills, spend time outdoors, and build confidence through hands-on conservation activities. Every participant reported that taking part had a positive impact on their mental and physical wellbeing.

Many spoke about feeling more connected to nature, gaining environmental knowledge, and enjoying the supportive atmosphere created by working together outdoors.

“Sometimes what we’re doing is hard work. Like today we’re putting in loads of wildflowers by the pond. But then I think about the spring and the bees and the butterflies that are going to love this. And then it makes me think what I can do at home to help them. I’ve never really thought about it before.”

“Bird watching was fab. Finding out about the different kinds of birds in the area and the pamphlets to identify the different species. And then when we’re in the minibus I say – there’s a buzzard! And I just get really excited.”

Increasing Biodiversity on the Farm

The impact on local wildlife has already been remarkable. The new pond and surrounding habitat have attracted a growing variety of species, including: Birds (Grey heron, Canada goose, Barn owl), Amphibians (Common frog, Common toad, Common newt) and Invertebrates (Great diving beetle, Blue-tailed damselfly, Water boatmen).

Building a Lasting Legacy for Wildlife

The Wildlife and Pond Area forms part of a long-term commitment to improving biodiversity across the farm. As habitats continue to mature, the project is expected to support an even greater variety of plants, insects, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

The benefits extend beyond the farm itself. Located along St Oswald’s Way through Harwood Forest, the site is enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike, creating opportunities for more people to experience and appreciate wildlife in the landscape.

By supporting projects like this, CJ Wildlife helps create spaces where both people and nature can thrive together, ensuring a richer future for wildlife and stronger connections between communities and the natural world.
