Why do redstarts need specialist nest boxes?

Redstarts are hole-nesting birds that naturally breed in cavities in mature trees, old walls and traditional buildings. As these nesting sites have become increasingly scarce, redstarts can struggle to find suitable places to raise their young. Providing a dedicated nest box helps replace these lost natural sites.

Where to place a redstart nest box

Redstart nest boxes should be placed 2–4 metres above the ground on a tree, wall or outbuilding, ideally near open woodland or lightly wooded areas. Choose a quiet location with some cover nearby and a clear flight path to the entrance. East or north-facing positions are often best to avoid strong sun and heavy rain.
