Northern Wheatear Breeding Behaviour

Understanding what you are watching makes the experience even more rewarding.

  • Egg Laying and Incubation: In spring, the female Northern Wheatear typically lays five to six pale blue eggs, often hidden deep within an old rabbit burrow or a rocky crevice. The female handles most of the incubation, which lasts about 13 to 14 days, while the male often stays nearby to guard the territory.

  • Feeding the Chicks: Once the eggs hatch, both parents work tirelessly to feed the hungry chicks. You will see them bringing in a steady stream of insects, caterpillars, and spiders. Unlike many other ground-nesting birds, wheatear chicks stay in the safety of their burrow for about two weeks before venturing out.

  • Fledging and Independence: After around 15 days, the young birds are ready to leave the nest (fledge). They will spend another few days nearby, perfecting their flight and hunting skills under the watchful eye of their parents, before becoming fully independent and preparing for their long migration.
