Why You Should Buy Live Food For Your Birds

BlackbirdFrom sunflower seeds to peanuts, there is no lack of choice when it comes to bird feeding and to attract as great a diversity of birds to your garden as possible, you should put out a wide variety of foods. One of the most important options you can provide for birds is live foods - read on to find out why.

A natural diet

Soft-bodied invertebrates such as worms are an important part of the diet of many British birds and by making these foods available, you'll increase the chances of these species paying your garden a visit. All manner of birds will take advantage of live foods, ranging from the tiny Wren to the impressive Great Spotted Woodpecker. Robins, Blackbirds, Thrushes, Dunnocks, wagtails and tits are just some of the other species that will readily consume live foods.

Bird superfood

Mealworms, Waxworms and Earthworms are all incredibly rich in protein, making them an ideal food source for birds that are raising young. Having to find enough food to feed a whole family puts a lot of strain on birds and, by providing live foods, you'll make it that bit easier for chicks to make it through to adulthood. Spring isn't the only time birds will take advantage of live foods, however. Frozen ground can make worms hard to find in winter, so adding some to your feeder can provide a welcome boost to birds' survival efforts.

Not just for birds

Live foods can attract more wildlife to your garden than birds alone; there are plenty of mammals that will eat worms just as readily. Indeed, they are a favourite of both Badgers and Hedgehogs, and with numbers of the latter falling worryingly, putting some worms out at ground level could give a helping hand to this much-loved but struggling mammal.
