Frequently asked questions

  1. What makes this range of products unique to kids?
The EasyFlip feeders are easy to open and refill and are the perfect size for little hands to carry. The Robin & Blackbird Mix, Peanuts for Tits & Woodpeckers, and Finch & Sparrow Blend are all packaged in recyclable, refillable tubs, which are also colour coordinated, so little ones can match the food to the feeder with ease. Plus, the instructions for the Build-Your-Own Nell Nest Box Kit, Dana Butterfly House Kit, and Jinto Feeding House Kit are clear and easy for kids to follow, so they can take the lead with just a little supervision from an adult.
  2. Why is it so important for kids to get involved in caring for nature?
In an ever-changing environment, many species in the UK are facing challenges such as reduced nesting sites for birds, and limited food sources. Thankfully, there is so much we can do to support wildlife at home. We want to inspire and encourage kids to take an interest in the wildlife living in their own gardens or outdoor spaces, or at their local park, to be part of the next generation of nature lovers! We also want to encourage kids to embrace being outdoors and spend some time away from screens. While phones and tablets can be important tools for learning, kids are increasingly missing out on the enormous benefits of spending time outdoors. By putting a bird feeder or nest box in the garden, kids can learn more about their local wildlife and see directly how their actions can have a positive impact on nature.
  3. Which birds or animals will the products in this range attract?
All products in the National Trust Kids Wildlife Range are designed to support the UK’s most common garden birds: Blackbirds, Robins, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, tits (Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Great Tit), Wrens, finches (Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch), and sparrows (House Sparrows, Tree Sparrows). The range also includes the Build-Your-Own Dana Butterfly House Kit, which will give a variety of butterflies a safe place to hibernate.
  4. How will the money raised from this range support the National Trust?
By purchasing products in the National Trust Kids Wildlife Range, you are encouraging kids to develop a lifelong connection with nature in their own gardens. You and they will also be supporting both the vital work conducted by the National Trust to care for historic places, countryside and coastline and the wildlife that lives there. The National Trust will receive a minimum of £60,000 per year through sales of this range.
  5. Do I need to provide adult supervision?
Although the instructions are easy for kids to follow, we do recommend adults supervise children when working on the Build-Your-Own Nell Nest Box Kit, Jinto Feeding House Kit, and Dana Butterfly House Kit. The EasyFlip feeders and food tubs have been designed so that kids can easily pick them up and carry them without help from an adult, although for younger children, we do recommend supervising the refilling of feeders. Although the food is purchased to human-grade standards, it is not for human consumption, so adults should make sure kids do not eat the food. It is important to note that all foods will contain traces of nuts, and so are not suitable for children with severe allergies to be around.
  6. Are the products in this range sustainable?
The EasyFlip feeders are recyclable; the wooden Build-Your-Own kits are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council®, and the plastic food tubs are refillable, reusable and recyclable. We are members of the On Pack Recycling Label scheme (OPRL), which allows us to use their logos on our products and to help show you exactly how to recycle which parts of our packaging.
