Nest boxes for pied flycatchers provide a safe and suitable place for these striking woodland birds to nest. Designed to suit their breeding behaviour, they are ideal for oak woodland and rural landscapes.
Pied flycatchers are hole-nesting birds that breed mainly in mature woodland, particularly oak woods. They naturally nest in cavities in trees, but suitable natural holes are often limited. Nest boxes play a vital role in supporting pied flycatcher populations by providing safe and reliable nesting sites.
Our nest boxes for pied flycatchers are designed with the correct entrance size and internal dimensions to suit the species. Standard small-hole nest boxes are typically used, providing protection from predators and disturbance while offering a suitable environment for raising young.
Pied flycatcher nest boxes should be placed 2–4 metres above the ground on mature trees in open woodland or along woodland edges. Choose a quiet location with a clear flight path. North- or east-facing positions are preferred to reduce exposure to strong sunlight and heavy rain.
The UK population of pied flycatchers is largely concentrated in western Britain, where conservation efforts and nest box schemes are especially important. By installing suitable nest boxes, you can help support successful breeding and contribute to the conservation of this much-loved summer visitor.
