Why do dormice need nest boxes?

Hazel dormice are nocturnal, tree-dwelling mammals that rely on dense, well-connected woodland and hedgerow habitats. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, natural nesting spots have become increasingly scarce. Dormouse nest boxes provide safe, dry places for dormice to sleep during the day, breed in summer, and hibernate through the winter.

Where should I place a dormouse box?

Dormouse boxes are best placed in well-vegetated woodland, hedgerows, or scrub with a good supply of food such as hazel, honeysuckle, bramble, or oak. Boxes should be fixed to tree trunks or posts about 1.5 to 2 metres above the ground and out of direct sunlight. Regular monitoring should be done only by those with a dormouse licence, as this species is protected under UK law.

Which type of dormouse nest box is best?

We offer both timber dormouse nesting boxes and WoodStone dormouse boxes. Wooden boxes are traditional and lightweight, while WoodStone provides superior insulation and durability, making it ideal for long-term conservation use. Both types are designed with entrance holes at the back to help deter predators.
