Nest Boxes for House Martins, Swifts and Swallows

House martins are unusual in that they build their nests on the outside of buildings, typically under the eaves, and often nest in close-knit colonies. For this reason, specially designed house martin nest cups can be mounted high on external walls just beneath the roofline. Installing several cups together increases the chances of attracting a breeding colony.

A lack of suitable nesting sites is one of the main reasons for the decline in swift populations. Our WoodStone Swift Nest Box can be mounted on an external wall or built into the fabric of a building. It should be positioned at least 5 metres above ground level, with a clear, unobstructed flight path. The entrance should not face south to avoid overheating.

Swallows nest inside buildings and require a different approach. Our swallow nest box should be installed within an enclosed space such as a porch, barn or outbuilding, with easy access through an open door or window. Multiple swallow nests can be installed in the same space, allowing some separation between nests and ensuring sufficient clear space above each nest to allow safe access and flight.
