Bird Food Quality & Pesticide Testing

Concerns about pesticides in the environment are widely shared, particularly when it comes to wildlife and garden birds. At CJ Wildlife, we take these concerns seriously and believe that transparency and regular testing are essential to maintaining trust.

The Pesticide Action Network (PAN) recently commissioned independent laboratory testing of a selection of wild bird foods for pesticide residues. As part of this research, three of our seed mixes were tested, including one organic product.

The results showed that two of the tested mixes contained very small traces of pesticides, at levels well below the maximum residue limits set out in European regulations. Our CJ Wildlife Organic Premium Bird Food contained no detectable pesticide residues and was recommended by PAN.

We work to the highest quality standards and carefully source ingredients to offer the best possible bird food. However, it is important to be open about the realities of today’s environment.

Pesticides are widespread and can be present in soil, water and the air. Even in protected countryside and nature reserves, it is not always possible to eliminate all traces completely. Birds feeding naturally in the wild are also exposed to these substances through their environment.

For this reason, the presence of extremely low-level residues does not automatically indicate poor quality or unsafe food, particularly when levels are well below recognised safety limits.

Regular testing to ensure consistent quality

To maintain high standards, CJ Wildlife carries out regular testing of our bird food through independent laboratories. These tests examine both ingredient quality and the presence of any pesticide residues.

Recent internal testing, covering bird food blends made up of multiple ingredients, identified a single substance listed under European pesticide regulations. The amount detected was extremely low and well below the permitted minimum residue level (MRL).

These findings were consistent with the results published by PAN and confirm that our quality controls are working as intended.

There are currently no specific legal standards in Europe for food intended for wild birds. In the absence of dedicated legislation, CJ Wildlife voluntarily applies the stringent European food and feed safety standards used for food intended for human consumption and for farmed birds such as poultry, which have comparable physiology to wild birds.

All our tested bird food meets these standards comfortably. This approach reflects our commitment to responsible feeding and to supporting garden birds in a safe and considered way.

Organic Bird Food

Our commitment to responsible feeding

Feeding birds responsibly means providing high-quality food, maintaining clean feeders and being attentive to changing guidance during periods of disease risk. We continue to monitor research, testing outcomes and expert advice to ensure our products remain appropriate for use in UK gardens.

By combining careful sourcing, independent testing and transparent communication, we aim to support birds while giving our customers confidence in the food they provide.
