A secure nesting place for Little Owls

Little Owls may be small, but they need plenty of space to raise a family. This specialist nest box has been designed to provide a safe, sheltered breeding site while helping to overcome one of the species’ biggest challenges: the loss of suitable natural nest cavities.

Developed in association with BirdLife Netherlands, the design incorporates several features that support successful nesting. Constructed from durable 18 mm exterior-grade plywood, the box offers excellent protection from the weather while creating a stable environment for breeding birds.

Designed with owl safety in mind

The spacious internal nesting chamber gives developing owlets room to exercise and strengthen their wings before fledging, reducing the need to venture outside too early. A specially designed double-baffle entrance keeps the nesting area dark and sheltered, closely mimicking the secluded conditions Little Owls prefer in natural cavities.

The entrance design also helps protect nesting birds from larger predators, including Tawny Owls, which may otherwise pose a threat to eggs and young birds.

Easy access for monitoring and maintenance

A removable roof panel provides convenient access for inspection, cleaning and conservation monitoring. The robust construction is designed for many years of use, making it a valuable long-term addition to suitable Little Owl habitat.

Where to install a Little Owl nest box

For the best chance of success, position the nest box between 3 and 5 metres above ground level on an isolated mature tree or building. Ideal locations include farmland, parkland, golf courses and other open landscapes with a mixture of rough grassland, hedgerows and small woodland areas where Little Owls can hunt for insects, small mammals and other prey.

Before installation, line the nesting chamber with wood chips or shredded bark to provide cushioning for eggs and young birds. Avoid using sawdust or soil, as these materials can block drainage holes.
