Tawny Owl Nest Box

This large wooden nest box is primarily designed for Tawny Owls but is also ideal for Stock Doves and Jackdaws, all of which naturally nest in tree cavities or quiet buildings. With such nesting sites becoming increasingly scarce, this box provides a safe and sheltered alternative for these cavity-nesting birds.

Install the box at least 3 metres above the ground, in a quiet area with a clear flight path to the entrance. Tawny Owls and Jackdaws may tolerate slightly busier areas if the box is mounted above 5 metres. For the safety of young Tawny Owls, which leave the nest before they can fly, it’s important to place the box near a tree with good branch cover, such as ivy-covered trunks.

Before the breeding season (as early as January for Tawny Owls), add a layer of dry wood shavings or shredded bark inside the box to encourage use. Stock Doves may nest well into autumn, so cleaning is best done in December.

The hinged front panel with latch makes maintenance easy, just open, remove any old nesting material, and refresh the contents.
