Lapwing Breeding Behaviour

Understanding what you are watching makes the experience even more rewarding.

  • Egg Laying and Incubation: In spring, the female lapwing usually lays three to four eggs in a simple scrape on the ground. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs, which hatch after about 24 to 28 days.

  • Feeding the Chicks: Once hatched, the chicks leave the nest almost immediately and begin foraging for themselves. The parents remain close by, protecting them and guiding them to good feeding areas rich in insects and other small invertebrates.

  • Fledging and Independence: After around 30 to 35 days, the young lapwings are ready to take their first flights. Even then, they stay with their parents for a while longer, learning to survive in the open farmland landscape.

About the ‘Beleef de Lente’ Project

This Farmland live stream is made possible through the generous support of our Dutch partner Vogelbescherming Netherlands and their inspiring Beleef de Lente project. Each spring, this initiative connects people with wildlife through live nest cameras, supported by dedicated volunteers and donations. By tuning in, you are not simply watching a nest, you are joining a wider community that celebrates and protects nature.
