Swift Nest Boxes & Nest Box Cameras

Inspired by what you see? Install a purpose-built swift nest box to provide a safe nesting space where traditional roof cavities and old buildings are disappearing. Swifts rely heavily on suitable nest sites, and well-positioned nest boxes can make a real difference to local populations. Add a discreet nest box camera and you can watch egg laying, chick development and fledging unfold live, without disturbance.

Common Swift Breeding Behaviour

Understanding what you are watching makes the experience even more fascinating.

  • Egg Laying and Incubation: In late spring, the female typically lays two to three eggs. Both adults share incubation duties for around 19 to 23 days.

  • Feeding the Chicks: Swift parents collect airborne insects, forming them into food balls carried in the throat pouch. Feeding visits can be fast and frequent during warm weather.

  • Fledging: After around 37 to 56 days, young swifts take their first flight — and may remain airborne for months before landing again.

Support a Thriving Garden Ecosystem

Common Swifts feed exclusively on flying insects, so healthy insect populations are essential. Wildlife-friendly gardens, ponds and flowering plants help support the insect life that swifts depend on. Providing high-quality bird food for garden birds also supports wider biodiversity, helping to maintain balanced and resilient ecosystems.

About the ‘Beleef de Lente’ Project

This Common Swift live stream is made possible through the generous support of our Dutch partner Vogelbescherming Netherlands and their inspiring Beleef de Lente project. Each spring, this initiative connects people with wildlife through live nest cameras, supported by dedicated volunteers and donations. By tuning in, you are not simply watching a nest; you are joining a wider community that celebrates and protects nature.
